Research and Resource Development

The Coalition has undertaken a number of action research projects to better understand the complex needs facing ESL learners, the availability of and access to ESL and social services, institutional responses to ESL issues and solutions to effective ESL education. The Coalition has also produced several resources that support community groups, school boards and schools in promoting effective ESL education, active parental involvement and school cultural competency.

Institutional Development

The Coalition activities aim to facilitate positive, equitable changes in public institutions in order to effectively respond to changing demographics and needs. We provide education and government stakeholders with our critiques and recommendations on the development of policies, practices and programs that affect ESL learners. We serve as an advisor or consultant to support institutions with their development and implementation of policies and programs.

Capacity Building

The Coalition promotes meaningful participation and collaboration among community, education and government stakeholders. Using the approach of community development and empowerment, we provide parental training so that immigrant parents can develop the skills and knowledge to be actively involved in public education. We facilitate planning processes among school and service partners to develop programs and services for ESL learners. We also provide community members, decision makers, and staff at all levels with a wide range of practical tools and resources, professional training and consultation to work toward effective ESL education and cultural competency.
